Manny Pacquiao Injury 2015 News: Boxer has Torn Rotator Cuff, Says they were ‘Sabotaged’
Manny Pacquiao showed his usual grace in defeat after Saturday's loss against undefeated Floyd Mayweather, Jr., downplaying the effects of a reported shoulder injury he had to fight with, saying, "It's part of the game."
It would later prove to be more than that as Dan Rafael of ESPN reported that it was actually a torn rotator cuff, or the same injury that ended Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant's season.
"Breaking news: Pacquiao to have shoulder surgery for "significant tear' in his right rotator cuff, according to Dr. Neal ElAttrache," Rafael tweeted.
Lance Pugmire also tweeted out that according to the Filipino's advisors, Pacquiao will be having surgery some time this week, and will be out of action for 4-6 months.
Pacquiao told reporters at his Delano Hotel Suite that he thought about postponing the fight, but ultimately decided against it believing he would be allowed injections of numbing agents that were approved by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.
Said Pacquiao in his native language, "We all talked. Freddie [Roach] even Bubuy [Fernandez, his close friend and trainer]. If I can't, we talked about it, but if it heals, if it recovers, it's okay, let's just not use it [in training], then on the night of the fight, it will be injected with the numbing agent. It's not a steroid, but it's legal here for numbing. The problem is we were sabotaged."
Pacquiao claims that the Nevada Athletic Commission prevented him from using the numbing agents on his shoulder on the night of the fight. NCA chairman Francisco Aguilar, for his part, said they were aware of the request for the injections, but that no injuries were disclosed to them at the weigh-in or on the medical questionnaires, as reported by Rappler.
The eight-division champion said the injury flared up in round 4 after his flurry had Mayweather covering up stuck on the ropes.
"I really needed that shot because if I throw a power hook or power jab, it hurt. I'm so disappointed in the commission because I believe they know but only said we didn't fill out the form," said Pacquiao.
A copy of the pre-fight medical questionnaire showing recently came out showing Pacquiao and his camp ticked "no" to the item asking about injury to shoulders, but did indicate the use of USDA allowed numbing agents that includes lidocaine, celestone, and bupivacaine.
