Manny Pacquiao Next Fight News: Freddie Roach Optimistic for Mayweather Super Showdown in 2015
For years fans have been waiting for the ultimate bout between Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao and American unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., but that wish has not yet been granted. However, a recent statement by boxing trainer Freddie Roach has given some hope to fans of both these boxing aces.
Roach has said that he is optimistic that the much-awaited fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. may take place some time in 2015, as Top Tank Promotions CEO Bob Arum has disclosed that he will talk to the CBS CEO Les Moonves regarding the super fight, reports Latin Post.
In a recent interview with Los Angeles Daily News, Roach, a Hall of Fame trainer, said, "I was there, I was the third party," referring to the meeting between Arum and Moonves.
He added, "I just listened a lot. But they spoke about what they could do and how to make the fight happen. Moonves said he can deliver Mayweather, and, obviously, Bob said he could deliver Pacquiao."
Roach hoped that eventually Arum and Moonves will arrive at a consensus to finalize the super showdown between Mayweather and Pacquiao in 2015, fulfilling the desires of boxing fans who have been demanding the fight for the past five years.
During the interview Roach said, "It was a very good meeting. What they said in that meeting, if they can do it, the fight will happen," adding, "Very soon. I think next. Moonves and Bob walked out to Moonves' car with their arms around each other. The right people are talking about it. I think that makes it a bigger possibility."
The website reports that meanwhile, Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions, announced on Twitter last Thursday that he is prepared to do his bit to make the super fight happen.
A report by BoxingScene claimed that a group of investors from United Arab Emirates are preparing rewarding guaranteed deals for both Pacquiao and Mayweather.
In case the fight takes place sometime next year, Roach is convinced Mayweather will taste the first defeat in his career in 48 fights at the hands of Pacquiao, who won a lopsided decision win over Chris Algieri last Saturday.
Roach said, "At this point, I think Mayweather's legs aren't there anymore," adding, "He's not as sharp as Manny is, if you compare his last fight with Manny's last fight. Three years ago, I thought it was a dead-even fight and real tough fight to pick. Now, I don't think that. I think we can knock Mayweather out at this point."
