Manny Pacquiao News: Self-Rehab Working Wonders, Could Fight as Early as 2015
Floyd Mayweather Jr., despite not officially announcing an opponent yet, is set to fight on Sep. 12, his "Fight of the Century" opponent Manny Pacquiao will be fighting early next year, if his business adviser Michael Koncz is to be believed.
Koncz was recently quoted in a Boxing Scene report saying that the eight-division former world champion, who is recuperating from a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, could fight in the first quarter of next year.
"It'll be next year, late February or March," Koncz was quoted via Mb.com. "We have actually sent videos of Manny's activities to his doctors in the US."
Top Rank chief Bob Arum, previously expressed his displeasure with Pacquiao missing a doctor's appointment in the US to checking on his injured shoulder, with the Filipino boxer insisting that he's doing self-rehab.
"It's fine with me if he's not going to be here in the US at the end of the month because the doctor was amazed when he watched the three-minute self-rehab video of Manny," Arum said.
"A doctor will go there in the Philippines in the next couple of weeks to evaluate Manny's shoulder and I'm really optimistic about it."
As noted by Philippine news outlet ABS-CBN, Arum refused to talk about Pacquiao's next fight, pointing out that the boxer's shoulder will have to be fully healed before deciding on his next opponent.
Meanwhile, Chris Williams of Boxing Scene opines that Koncz's timeline of "February or March 2015" is very ambitious for a person with a shoulder injury that is as bad as Pacquiao's.
Williams notes that he has not seen an athlete come back form a torn rotator cuff in nine to 10 months. A March bout would put Pacquiao just eight months removed from his May 7 surgery on his injured shoulder.
