Manny Pacquiao Latest News: Promoter Says Boxer to Retire in 2016, Focus on Becoming Next Philippine President
While it may seem to be incredible to many boxing fans, retirement plans of Manny Pacquiao are once again in circulation online and this time the news originates from his promoter Bob Arum.
According to Christian Today, rumors about Pacquiao's retirement are going full steam and it seems that he is very serious about his political career after hanging his gloves.
TMZ Sports reports that Arum recently revealed that although Pacquiao is primed for a fight in 2016, it may be the Filipino boxing icon's last fight in the ring. The promoter said, "I think Manny will retire once he's elected to the Senate of the Philippines which is next year ... he's gonna hang up the gloves."
Meanwhile, the Philippines will be holding its national elections in May 2016 and it is well known that Pacquiao will be running for a seat in the Senate. Nevertheless, it appears that the current Saranggani congressman's political ambitions are higher and they go as far as the country's presidency. In fact, this has evoked mixed reactions from the legendary boxer's own countrymen.
Despite the fact that Pacquiao has brought much glory to the Philippines through his achievements in professional boxing, not many consider him to be a suitable candidate for the country's presidency.
While Pacquiao is eager to serve as well as dedicate his time to the Filipino people, running a country is an entirely different issue and involves a lot more than what he is capable of. Irrespective of and no matter what others may think, the fact remains that the final decision will be taken by the country's first and only eight-division world boxing champion.
As far as Pacaiao's expected return to the ring in 2016 is concerned, still there is no official confirmation regarding whom he would be facing. However, the rumor mill is abuzz that Amir Khan will be his next competitor. Some rumors also suggest that the Filipino could be eyeing a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. too.
