'Maleficent 2' Cast News: Actress Angelina Jolie Eyed to Reprise Role

It has recently been announced that Disney will be going forward with a sequel for their live action 'Maleficent' film starring Angelina Jolie.

The project is still in early production, however the studio has locked down Linda Woolverton to pen the script, and are actively in negotiations with Jolie to reprise her role as the title character.

"That will be a whole different conversation, of course, and they would have to make a new deal with her to reprise. She developed but didn't star in sequels to either Salt or Wanted but Disney is moving forward and hoping it gets a fairy tale ending. Joe Roth is back as the film's producer, and it's unclear whether Robert Stromberg will be back. He's the Oscar-winning production designer who made his directing debut," writes Deadline.

'Maleficent' premiered in 2014 and told the 'Sleeping Beauty' story from the perspective of the villain, from her troubled childhood to her resentful adulthood.

At the premiere of the film, Jolie spoke on how much she coveted the role.

"I love this character," Jolie said according to Access Hollywood. "We did it as a team and Linda [Woolverton] wrote a beautiful script and I just tried to do my best to give everybody what they expect from her, 'cause I certainly loved her when I was a kid and I didn't want to disappoint the fans. I figured if I was having fun, they'd have fun."

The movie was also highly successful at the box office, which is what's most likely prompting Disney to go through with a sequel.

"Not surprising that another Maleficent would be a major priority for the studio's revisionist fairy tale slate. It was a pricey film at a reported $180 million, but Maleficent grossed nearly $760 million worldwide," writes Deadline.
