'Mad Men' New Series News: AMC Plans for Peggy & Sally Spin-Off
In the big wide world of television spin-offs and reboots comes news of a potential project that had spawned from AMC's 'Mad Men'. Two spin-offs for the popular drama series were considered at one point focusing on characters Peggy Olsen and Sally Draper.
In a recent interview with THR, it was revealed that the idea was born in between Seasons 4 and 5. Showrunner Matt Weiner disagreed with the idea and threatened to not return if they decided to go through with it.
Lionsgate COO Sandra Stern states:
"When we first started negotiating with AMC, one of the things they wanted was a spinoff. We talked about doing a contemporary one. Given the fact that [Mad Men] ends nearly 50 years ago, most of the characters would be dead. Sally was the one character young enough that you could see her 30 or 40 years later. There was a time we wanted a Peggy spinÂoff, too, and, a la Better Call Saul, a minor character going off to L.A. [Series creator and showrunner] Matt [Weiner] wasn't comfortable committing to a spinoff."
It was uncertain if any of the actors would have committed to the spinoff without the direction of Weiner. Despite the people who would have been comfortable with the idea, the project was obviously scrapped.
'Mad Men' hopes to wrap up their long series successfully in the upcoming seventh season return on April 5th.
