Lupita Nyong’o on Cover of Glamour Magazine; Actress Shares Thoughts on Fame and Oprah Winfrey
Lupita Nyong'o recently appeared on the cover of Glamour Magazine's December 2014 annual Women of The Year issue, and the actress shared about her fame and how Oprah Winfrey served as her role model.
Nyong'o, who rose into fame after a stellar performance that awarded her an Oscar in "12 Years a Slave" admitted that being famous has its downside.
"I've had somebody say, 'I want you at my wedding, but I don't want you to pull focus, so wear jeans!" noted that actress after being asked about how becoming famous affected her personal life.
"Losing my anonymity is something that's proving to be very challenging. It's good for your soul to walk around unnoticed; there's so much you can't do when everybody knows who you are. And I so miss those little things," the 31-year old actress continued.
Nyong'o also shared how she owed much to Oprah Winfrey for her successes.
"Oprah played a big role in my understanding of what it meant to be female and to really step into your own power. I wouldn't even call her a role model; she was literally a reference point. You have dictionary, you have the Bible, you have Oprah," the actress revealed.
"I've heard people talk about images in popular culture changing, and that makes me feel great, because it means that the little girl I was, once upon a time, has an image to instill in her that she is beautiful, that she is worthy - that she can... Until I saw people who looked like me, doing the things I wanted to, I wasn't so sure it was a possibility. Seeing Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah in The Color Purple, it dawned on me: 'Oh - I could be an actress!' We plant the seed of possibility," she added.
The Oscar-winning actress and the talk show host's relationship started when they met at the Hollywood Reporter roundtable event-and the rest is history.
"I did the Hollywood Reporter roundtable with her," Nyong'o said in an interview with Vanity Fair early November last year.
"I was sitting at my makeup station and the hair stylist looked at me in the mirror and mouthed, 'Oprah.' I was like, 'What?!' It was like slow motion. I got up. I turned around and she was there. Her arms were outstretched and she gave me a big hug. She was like, 'You were amazing!'" Nyong'o exclaimed.
