'Luke Cage' News: Alfre Woodard Tapped for Possible Villain Role
The slated Marvel Netflix series 'Luke Cage' has recently enlisted the help of veteran actress Alfre Woodard for a possible comic book role.
Woodard is set to star as a listed character named Minetta, however there is reason to believe that the character will soon take the form of comic book villain Black Mariah. She is a classic villain of both Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Here's Marvel's description for the character:
"Black Mariah was the leader of a gang of New York criminals called the Rat Pack. Their primary source of criminal activity would be using a stolen ambulance to pick up the bodies of the recently deceased, and then stealing whatever valuables they had on their person. When a man named Frank Jenks was murdered in the Gem Theater, it would be Black Mariah's gang that would pick up the body. When Jenks' widow learned the truth, she would hire Luke Cage (who was at the scene of the murder) to find her husband's body, the sympathetic Cage would take the job free of charge."
Luke Cage is set to be portrayed by actor Mike Colter, who will make an appearance in 'Jessica Jones,' set to air later this year. His role will be a man who has been wrongly accused of a crime that gets granted super strength.
'Luke Cage' is expected to air sometime in late 2016.
Marvel released this press release regarding the series earlier this year:
"Netflix & Marvel Television announced today that Cheo Hodari Coker will serve as executive producer and showrunner of the anticipated series, Marvel's Luke Cage. Coker is writing the first two episodes of the series that will premiere in 2016, everywhere that Netflix is available."
