'Lowriders' Cast News: ‘Supergirl’ Star Melissa Benoist Tapped for Role in Upcoming Film
Melissa Benoist, star of the new superhero series, Supergirl, has just finished negotiations to star in the new film, Lowriders from Universal Pictures, Blumhouse and Imagine Entertainment.
The events of the film are set in East LA, home of lowrider cars and street tagging.
The film will be directed by Ricardo de Montreuil and Josh Bierne Gordon and Justin Tipping wrote the final draft of the script, while previous drafts were penned by Cheo Hodari Coker and Elgin James.
Benoist has been cast to play Lorelai. Lily Collins and Nicola Peltz are two actresses who had previously been considered for the role.
This puts Benoist back together with Blumhouse who produced Whiplash. In Whiplash, she played Miles Teller's girlfriend, and the film earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
Other actors starring in the film include Demain Bichirr, Eva Longoria, Tony Revolori, Gabriel Chavarria, Theo Rossi and Yvette Monreal.
The story focuses on a teenager who his forced to choose sides between his traditional father, and his estranged brother who is a gangbanger.
Both his father and his brother are competing in the annual lowrider "Supershow."
The movie is being produced by Brian Grazer of Imagine an Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions.
Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol will be executive producing, while Kim Roth and Alexandre Dauman oversee the project for Imagine and Couper Samuelson oversee it for Blumhouse Productions.
Benoist has starred in several films and televisions series, including The Longest Ride, Danny Collins, Band of Robbers, Glee, and of course Supergirl the new drama that will premiere in November on CBS.
