Los Angeles Lakers NBA Trade News, Rumors: George Karl Pushing for Cousins Trade
Just a day after reports came out that the Los Angeles Lakers were actively pursuing trade scenarios for Sacramento Kings All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, multiple reports have surfaced that newly-hired head coach George Karl has an "intense desire" to trade the talented big man.
As reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Karl has been recruiting Kings vice president of basketball operations Vlade Divac along with multiple players on the team's roster to come to his side and make the case to owner Vivek Ranadive that Cousins has to go.
"I have no idea where that's coming from," Ranadive told USA Today Sports Monday regarding the rumors about potentially trading their franchise center. "But if you like, you should talk to Vlade because I know Vlade feels exactly the same way, and I'm deferring to Vlade on everything. We have no interest in moving him. From my perspective, it's really simple: We feel that he's a one-of-a-kind player, and we have a group of players right now and we're going to build on it."
After four losing seasons that saw the hiring and firing of multiple head coaches, as well as a change of ownership, Cousins developed firm loyalty to former Kings coach Mike Malone, which lead to the Kings winning nine of their first 15 games last season. Ranadive fired Malone shortly after.
According to Chris Broussard of ESPN, Karl is interested in acquiring his former point guard Ty Lawson, as well as his former power forward Kenneth Faried.
Reports have also come out that the Kings are also shopping around their second-best player Rudy Gay in possible trade scenarios. Gay signed a three-year, $40 million extension that kicks in for the 2015-2016 season, and has played some of his best basketball in his two-plus seasons with the Kings.
League sources have said that the Kings and Dallas Mavericks estranged point guard Rajon Rondo have mutual interest, and that Rondo is intrigued with the idea of a potential one-year deal in Sacramento.
