Los Angeles Lakers NBA 2015 News: LA's Steve Nash Officially Announces Retirement
Steve Nash from the Los Angeles Lakers decided it was time for him to officially retire. The announcement first came in the form of a letter for Derek Jeter's website The Player's Tribune.
"When I signed with the Lakers, I had big dreams of lifting the fans up and lighting this city on fire," Nash wrote, "I turned down more lucrative offers to come to L.A. because I wanted to be in the 'fire,' and play for high risk and high reward in my last NBA chapter."
Despite his big dreams, Nash ended up breaking his leg in the second game with the Lakers of the 2012-2013 season. Last year, he was supposed to play more but had other issues with nerve and back injuries. The Laker first signed Nash a $28 million deal in 2012 when Nash transferred from playing with the Phoenix Suns. According to The Wrap, Nash only played 65 out of 164 games with the Lakers.
The 41-year-old point guard's stats over with 19-year NBA career are impressive. He had MVP honors two years in a row and held a place of Hall of Fame, two of the most honored titles an NBA player can receive. He is also has 10,335 assists under his belt, the third most assists in NBA history behind John Stockton and Jason Kidd.
In an interview with ESPN, Nash said, "It's just a weird transition"Ž. Every athlete goes through it. A lot of people say an athlete dies twice, and in some ways, without being salacious, that's true. If you want to enjoy and be happy in life, you have in some ways to say goodbye to your former self."
