Los Angeles Clippers NBA 2015 News: DeAndre Jordan Backs Out of Mavs Deal
In the first few days of free agency, the Dallas Mavericks appeared to have tilted the power structure in the Western Conference after free agent DeAndre Jordan agreed to a four-year, $80 million deal with the Mavs. Instead, the coveted big man has decided to stay put, backing out of his verbal agreement to remain with the Los Angeles Clippers.
As reported by the Associated Press, Jordan made the decision after a meeting at his Houston home with a contingent of Clippers including owner Steve Ballmer, coach and general manager Doc Rivers, Blake Griffin, and Paul Pierce.
The Clippers announced the deal Wednesday night tweeting, "WE'RE OFFICIALLY CENTERED."
The surprising turn of events played out very publicly on Twitter when the players involved"”Chandler Parsons, Griffin, J.J. Redick, Chris Paul, and Pierce sent out various emoji tweets. Griffin also posted a photo of a chair underneath a door handle writing, "Don't agree with the furniture layout but I'm not an interior designer."
The Clippers have always had the advantage of signing Jordan to a longer contract and more money, but earlier reports cited a variety of reasons for the defensive center leaving Los Angeles"”from a supposed rift with Paul, to wanting to play a bigger role on a team.
The Mavs now have a lot of thinking to do as they banked on the addition of Jordan and Wes Matthews as moves that could have them avoid a major rebuild.
"We had the discussion that if we couldn't get a serious free agent, whether it was one of the guys still out there or some guys who already went, then it was time to take a step back," Mavs owner Mark Cuban told KTCK-AM Dallas Sunday.
Jordan is expected to sign for five years and $110 million with the Clippers.
