Liverpool Transfer News, Rumors 2015: Steven Gerrard Prepares for LA Galaxy
New reports are claiming that footballer Steven Gerrard will quit as Liverpool's captain and will move to Los Angeles Galaxy in July.
The player will end his contract with Liverpool in June. Gerrard is in the final stages of preparation for an 18-month deal worth £6 million with the Galaxy. This means that the captain is one of the highest paid players in Major League Soccer.
Galaxy's previous captain Landon Donovan has retired and this paved the way for Gerrard's entrance.
In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Gerrard admitted that the change is difficult but he is also looking forward to new opportunities.
"The time's right for myself and my family for the change, for the fresh challenge. I've been here for a long time. I've given an awful lot back to this club. But I now I feel it's the time for a fresh break and to try something different," the captain said.
The player admitted that it is a "match made in heaven" for him and the Galaxy.
"I want to finish my career very strong. I want to add some more medals and trophies to my collection. One of the reasons why I chose the LA Galaxy was because of the success they've had recently. But also the plans for more success in the future," Gerrard added.
Gerrard confirmed that there were several offers long before he ever wanted to leave Liverpool, but this is the only time he considered it.
Bruce Arena who coaches the Galaxy has expressed his excitement for Gerrard's arrival. The coach further commented that Gerrard is a quality player and will fit into the team well.
Chris Klein, president of the Galaxy team expressed similar thoughts. The decision to acquire Gerrard was based on what kind of player will transition well as a Galaxy member. Beyond that, Klein also said that Gerrard is a "perfect fit."
Meanwhile, Liverpool received criticism for Gerrard's departure. Evidently, there are some people who think that the team should have made more of an effort in keeping their captain.
However, fans can witness Gerrard's remaining games with Liverpool starting on Jan. 17 in a game against Aston Villa at Villa Park, England.
