Liverpool January 2015 Transfer Rumors: Steven Gerrard Leaving Liverpool For LA Galaxy?
Footballer Steven Gerrard confirmed Saturday that he has decided to leave Liverpool after the English Premier League season, and now reports claim that the Liverpool captain is going to be signing up with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Rumors have been circulating for weeks about Gerrard moving on to play in the United States once the season ends. It was news confirmed by the footballer himself when he stated that he was leaving Liverpool. Now the stories have moved on as to what team Gerrard is signing up with and insiders say that he is joining LA Galaxy.
LA Galaxy, the 2014 champions of Major League Soccer, signed on Gerrard for 18 months in a pro-rated deal worth $6 million, according to a source that spoke to Jeff Carlisle of ESPN FC.
Gerrard will reportedly be replacing Landon Donovan, the Galaxy's former midfielder who retired last month after winning the MLS Cup. Donovan's leaving not only left the team vacant, but also left a spot open in the MLS's three Designated Players spots, wherein the League is allowed to sign up to three high-priced stars.
The other two spots are filled by defender Omar Gonzalez from the U.S. and striker Robbie Keane from the Republic of Ireland.
It was a deal that the source claimed was approved by the MLS Board of Governors in exchange for the League acquiring $750,000 from the deal.
It was a statement neither confirmed nor denied by a representative of the MLS as they told ESPN FC that the League was unable to comment on the potential player agreement.
Another team rumored to have its eyes on Gerrard as well is the New York Red Bulls, which is looking to replace Thierry Henry, according to Yahoo!.
Should Gerrard go with the Galaxy though, he is one among many of their superstar imports from England. It is similar to 2007 when they acquired David Beckham form the Manchester United and to 2011 when they nabbed Keane, who used to play with Gerrard in Liverpool in 2008 and 2009.
