Live-Action 'Aladdin' Prequel News: Upcoming Disney Movie Titled ‘Genies’ Currently in the Works
Disney has just announced that a live-action 'Aladdin' prequel titled 'Genies' is currently in the works. This is another live-action movie from Disney, which is slated for release in the coming years.
Quoting a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Latin Post states that Disney is developing 'Genies,' a live-action comedy movie that will be a prequel to 'Aladdin.' While Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who both earlier wrote the 'Freddy vs Jason' movie, are currently writing 'Genies,' Tripp Vinson is the producer of the project.
According to the report in The Hollywood Reporter, 'Genies' narrates the story of the Genie, voiced by the late Robin Williams in the 1992 original animated movie, and how he ended up in the lamp. The late Robin Williams had lent his voice for the original 1992 animated movie. On the other hand, 'Aladdin' is the story of a street urchin who discovers a lamp that unleashes a Genie, who grants him three wishes. The animated movie is considered to be among the best films from Disney.
Following the untimely death of Robin Williams, Disney is now looking for an actor to play the role of Genie in the upcoming movie. According to some reports, James Inglehart, who won a Tony award for his performance in portraying the character of Genie in the Broadway version of 'Aladdin,' may bag the role. As of now, it is not certain whether it will be the same Genie that Robin Williams voiced or the movie will be a different one.
Rolling Stone reported that Disney has been hugely successful in live-action remakes of films like 'Cinderella,' 'Maleficent' (which is based on 'Sleeping Beauty') and 'Alice in Wonderland.' Currently, Disney also has a live-action version of 'Pinocchio' and 'Winnie The Pooh' in the works. The studio expects that these under-production live-action movies will also be as successful as the previous ones.
At the same time, Disney is also making a live action film titled 'The Jungle Book,' which will be a blend of both live-action and animation. In addition, a new reboot of 'Beauty and the Beast' starring Emma Watson is scheduled for release in 2017.
Recently, Disney announced a live-action version of 'Prince Charming,' a stand-alone movie based on a character in 'Cinderella.'
