'Independence Day 2' Release Date, Cast News, Rumors: 'Hunger Games' Actor Liam Hemsworth Tapped for Role?
The long overdue sequel to Will Smith's breakout film "Independence Day," and its producers have their eyes set on the "Hunger Games" actor, Liam Hemsworth, to possibly star in the movie.
On that note, Smith has confirmed that he would not be making an appearance in the the sequel film which leaves the role currently open.
"Liam Hemsworth, the younger brother of Thor star Chris Hemsworth, has been offered the leading role in the long-anticipated sequel to the 1996 perennial crowd-pleaser. Should the report prove true, this will be a major jump in the stock of the younger Hemsworth brother, as he attempts to fill the unmistakably charismatic leading man shoes of Will Smith - who, after a period of negotiations, decided he would not be returning for a second run with the Independence Day franchise," writes Business Insider.
The original movie starred Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman in an attempt to thwart an alien invasion. It has been confirmed that Goldblum and Pullman will be returning to reprise their roles.
The new movie is reported to take place 20 years after the events of the first. There is no other news on what premise the movie will be taking.
Producers hope that in Hemsworth's casting, the younger generation along with fans of the original will take to the film. The actor isn't particularly known for his acting prowess, but his popularity as the "Hunger Games" heartthrob may affect the demographic of moviegoers.
Director Roland Emmerich is gearing up to start production this May. The most recent draft of the script comes from Carter Blanchard, the scribe who took to "The Amazing Spiderman 1 & 2."
The movie's original release date is set to hit theaters on June 24th, 2016.
