Leonardo DiCaprio Latest News: Actor to Portray Serial Killer in News Martin Scorsese Movie
Oscar nominated actor Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese will team up again for a new thriller movie based on 2003 best selling book by Erik Larson titled "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and the Madness at the Fair that Changed America."
According to IB Times, the script of the upcoming film will be penned by Billy Ray, best known for his work on 'The Hunger Games' and 'Captain Phillips.' Deadline, which first broke the news, reports that DiCaprio will portray the character of a serial killer named Dr. H.H. Holmes, who confessed to murdering 27 women in 1893. The film will be based on the real-life story of Holmes, who is believed to have murdered about 200 people.
Deadline states that the character of DiCaprio in the movie will be "the 19th-century equivalent of Hannibal Lecter." Holmes is also known for building a hotel, later monikered "The Murder Castle." He reportedly took his victims to this hotel and tortured them in various ways. The castle comprised various torture rooms including huge acid pits and gas pipelines, where Holmes allegedly asphyxiated and tortured his victims.
Eventually, Holmes was hanged in May 1896 following conviction in a murder case. During the court trial, Holmes confessed that he was "born with a devil" in him.
Holmes' Wikipedia biography reads, "I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing - I was born with the 'Evil One' standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world, and he has been with me since."
Incidentally, the film has been in discussion for a decade now. Initially, Tom Cruise acquired the rights to the book in 2003, but in 2007, it was acquired by Paramount Pictures.
The upcoming movie will be the first project of DiCaprio and Scorsese together since 2013's 'The Wolf of Wall Street.' In recent years, the actor and the director have also collaborated on some of the most memorable movies, including 'Gangs Of New York,' 'The Aviator,' 'The Departed' and 'Shutter Island.'
