'Law & Order' Renewal Rumors: NBC to Bring Back Series for Season 21?
There is a precedent in modern television; shows can come back for a second round. Shows like Heroes, Twin Peaks and Arrested Development have all seen their lives renewed on other networks, evolving into different and sometimes better shows.
The limited series "retooling" is not the same as a full season order, but they can provide closure for shows that received abrupt cancellations and needed more time to finish the story.
The network has not commented on the veracity of these rumors, but there is movement in the ranks of actors associated with the project.
Original members and high profile actors most associated with the brand, like Sam Waterson and Chris Noth, have been approached, according to Deadline, about the idea of returning to film a limited series 10-episode project.
Ever since the show was canceled abruptly in May 2010, there has been the rumor of bringing back members of the cast in a revival to "wrap up the case."
A new limited series program could be exactly what is needed for the Law & Order brand, the show that ran on NBC for 20 seasons and tied Gunsmoke as longest running primetime drama.
While Law & Order has been off the air for several years now, its mark on the television drama is indelible. Between reruns and spinoffs, the modern crime drama was set into motion by the Law and Order brand.
Creator of the brand, Dick Wolf, has a long history collaborating with NBC to create riveting dramas. Law and Order SVU, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD have been a boon to the network. This marks the 17th season pickup for Law & Order SVU, proving the brand has staying power and interest among viewers.
Network executives reiterate that the likelihood of a reboot is constantly in conversation and has been since for quite a while - but nothing has ever materialized.
Fans of the brand will continue to hold out hope that the beloved show will be able to come back for, however, brief a run it may be.
