New York Knicks NBA 2015 Draft News: New York Looks to Trade No. 1 Pick This Summer?
Phil Jackson has said that his experiment in his first year as New York Knicks president has "fallen flat on its face." That may be an understatement considering the Knicks, who had playoff aspirations when Jackson was hired this offseason, have the worst record in the league (as of this writing).
If there's one silver lining to this disaster of a season, it's that the Knicks own their draft pick this summer, which will turn out to be an extremely valuable asset wherever it lands.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst, though, speculates that the Knicks may put the pick on the trading table.
"The interesting thing that I'm sort of hearing about the Knicks is"¦they're looking at opportunities to see what they could possibly get if they trade their draft pick," Windhorst said on ESPN New York's Robin Lundberg Show.
"My feel is that, wherever the pick, wherever the Knicks land, especially since there's now a bit of debate at the No. 1 pick"¦I think the Knicks will make that pick available"”even if it's the fourth pick. I think they will look to try and cash in on a player, and there may be a star or two that ends up being available this summer."
SB Nation's Yaron Weitzman points out that the Knicks could go the Cleveland Cavaliers' route when they traded No. 1 pick Andrew Wiggins for Kevin Love this past offseason.
That scenario would take advantage of their lone star Carmelo Anthony who will be 31 next year. Weitzman hypothesizes that should New York make a similar deal in getting a star for their pick, they could use their almost $25 million in cap space to sign another free agent.
Among the names hitting the free agent market this summer are LaMarcus Aldridge, Marc Gasol, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Goran Dragic, DeAndre Jordan, Paul Millsap, Greg Monroe, Rajon Rondo, and Draymond Green.
