Kerrie Roberts Interview: New Album "Time for the Show" Out April 2
American Contemporary Christian artist Kerrie Roberts is gearing up to release her second album, Time For The Show on April 2, 2013. The Nashville-based singer/songwriter sat down with BREATHEcast to talk about growing up in the Church, Katy Perry dance moves, and her most vulnerable album yet.
Tell me about Time For The Show. How does it compare/differ from your self titled 2010 release?
The biggest difference for me was just in the process. The first album, I had just moved from New York. Working within the machine and the framework of someone else's ideas can be really overwhelming.
Then the second time around I just felt more freedom from that. I also had experience on the road, and I felt like I knew my fans. The first album I knew who I was singing to, but on the second one I had actually seen their faces and felt way more connected. I wanted to focus the album on writing something I thought they'd enjoy. I wanted a praise moment. I wanted a heartbreak moment. I wanted the album to be fun.
What can fans expect from a Kerrie Roberts concert?
On the road I would do "Firework" [Katy Perry] covers just to see everybody light up and dance around. I knew we needed some up-tempo dance moments to really enjoy the live experience and the second album.
I'd do a medley of that into the chorus of Pink's "Pretty Please". How people responded to it definitely made me want to have a dance moment on this record.
So it's not just Christian music that informs your music?
I listen to everything. I listen to the radio. That's not even an endorsement. I want to know what everybody is listening to. I'm the same way with books. I want to know what people are consuming and want to try and understand it. I'm definitely a music lover.
How did you get involved with ministry through music?
I was born into and called into it. My dad's a pastor and he still does full-time ministry. Church is life. I was in church literally everyday with Bible studies and choir practice and Sunday morning and Sunday night services.
My mom led worship and was head of the music department so I was there by default but really fell in love with it.
I heard a funny story of you joining the adult choir when you were about 6-7...
Well, I wasn't old enough to be in the adult choir but I was at all the practices. I knew all the songs and was at home and mom was like, "how would you like singing that as a solo on Sunday?" That was my first solo. It's just always been a part of life. I just really love music, and that artform and that kind of expression. I followed after it in high school and we'd worship in chapels and musical theater. Then I got my performance degree.
Music has always been in me. I didn't really know what being a CCM artist would like. Then once you're in it, you realize this is any different at all, which is really cool; how it all came together.
Do you have any specific Bible verses you draw songwriting inspiration from?
"Time For The Show"- Daniel 12:3 - Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
"Not Real Yet" - Mark 9:24 - And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
What message do you want fans [or potential new fans] to take away from your music?
The first album is about the harder side of faith, hope and love. It was a lot about healing. The second album is much more of a celebration. Time for the Show is a call to action to show love, mercy and heart. It's also about challenging yourself personally to not be afraid to fail. God's in control so just be yourself. Everything fades away but God never changes, so you better take some time to praise him.
I would hope the fans that I already have would feel that and have these times of celebration and praise and enjoy the intimate moments. It's a really vulnerable album. Always what you want is for people who are believers to be more drawn into the Church and if they aren't believers, to be entranced by what they heard
What's next for Kerrie Roberts?
My last tour was the Christmas tour, which was awesome. Right now what I have for the spring is a lot of one-offs. I've been doing more Sunday morning church services, which really feels like home.
I just got married this last November. Dating was long distance so for the first time we're able to live in the same place and get a feel for what that part of life is. It's been really great to be gone on the weekends and when he can come with me he does. He's a pastor's kid too so he jumps right in and does whatever he can.
I'm doing a StageIt online concert to celebrate the album coming out Tuesday. I have the whole band. Fans can buy tickets and they can chat in. Doing fun stuff like that, and working on music video stuff and always writing. So it's busy but really good.
