Katy Perry Makes Plea to God During Super Bowl XLIX: Is She Returning to the Christian Faith? [WATCH HERE]
Millions watched as Katy Perry performed a mash up of her greatest hits during Super Bowl XLIX, but it was her final statement during the performance that has some wondering whether or not she could be returning to her Christian roots.
Perry ended her colorful performance featuring Missy Elliot and Lenny Kravitz by shouting the words "God Bless America." Immediately it raised eyebrows from some watching, questioning whether or not Perry was talking about the Christian God or just being traditional.
The fact that her evangelical minister father, Keith Hudson was reportedly in attendance added fuel to that flame since he is known as a Bible believing "end times" preacher. Hudson told reporters he is proud that his daughter landed the coveted half-time show at one of the biggest sporting event in America. "I'm always proud. I'm a proud father," He said.
Perry, although sometimes pegged completely inappropriate with her costumes, was a bit more conservative in comparison to some of female half-time performers of the past. During the super bowl press conference before her performance, the California girl emphasized the fact that she wanted people to focus on the music.
Although she ended the half-time show by singing her inspiration tune, "Fire Work" and shouting out to God, Perry has disassociated herself with the Christian religion in the past. In an interview with Marie Claire she said, "I don't believe in a Heaven or a Hell, or an old man sitting on a throne...I'm not Buddhist, I'm not Hindu, I'm not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God."
Perry grew up in a Christian home with both parents being Pentecostal traveling ministers. In 2012 the pop star released a revealing diary of her California Dreams Tour titled, 'Katy Perry: Part of Me.' In the film she spoke of her upbringing as a Christian, and being engulfed in church activities.
Perry, once a Christian artist herself, is known to send mixed message. Her albums have left listeners wondering as to where she stands in her faith because she so often uses Christian lingo in her lyrics. Her newest album Prism, features her hit single "Unconditional," and song "By the Grace of God," both, which are songs loaded with Christian content.
Although no one knows which God Perry pleaded with at Super Bowl XLIX, thousands on Twitter were moved by her performance and many on social media were compelled to send the singer blessings back.
