It latest reports are to be believed, celebrity couple Katy Perry and John Mayer, who have been on an on-and-off relationship for many years now, have once again called it quits. According to rumors, the couple has split up for the fourth time in barely three weeks after the two were seen spending the Fourth of July holiday together in Chicago.

According to The Inquisitr, while neither has confirmed the reports, recently John took to his Twitter handle to state, "I wouldn't feel right posting anything else before saying my heart hurts today." This is perhaps an indication that the breakup is for real.

Meanwhile, a source claiming to be close to Mayer as well as Katy has confirmed the news to E! News. The report states that although "the insider didn't offer any specifics as to the reasoning behind [Mayer and Perry's] decision to break up," in the past, Perry and Mayer have split due to differences related to "distance" and "trust issues." However, it is apparent that the two still care for one another.

Christian Today reports that Perry and Mayer started dating three years ago, and they were spotted together for the first time in June 2012. The two were seen getting cozy at Soho House in Los Angeles. The couple broke up that June itself, only to reunite two weeks later.

The "Hot and Cold" singer and the "Daughters" hitmaker recorded a song together called "Who You Love'" in 2013, and they also shot a music video together which showed them kissing.

The pair broke up again in February 2014, supposedly owing to their busy schedules. They maintained a distance from each other until January last, when Perry and Meyer were again seen together attending a dinner party in Beverly Hills. A source revealed to the Daily Mail that Perry and Mayer supposedly arrived at the event in separate cars and left separately prior to reuniting at Perry's home.

All through their on-off relationship, there have been sporadic rumors that the Perry and Meyer were engaged. In fact, the most recent engagement rumor circulated just before they split in 2014.

Following her divorce from actor Russell Brand in 2011, Mayer is Perry's first boyfriend. in the meantime, Mayer has been linked to celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Minka Kelly.
