Kate Middleton News: Duchess of Cambridge Speak Out About Stigma of Mental Health

The Duchess of Cambridge spoke yet again about another awareness in the U.K. Kate Middleton, being a mother herself, encouraged parents to stop the stigma about mental health in a new video released online of the Princess speaking and pushing for this concern.

The mother of one and soon to be mother of two talked about how the situation is evident in this time and age and how serious it is that needs the attention of many. "The challenges children face in the U.K. today could often feel overwhelming. Both Prince William and I have seen that many young people are struggling to cope with the impact of bullying, domestic violence, family breakdowns and more," Middleton said.

While many think that these incidents do not have a possible lasting mental effect to children and even adults, Middleton reveals that it has serious effects. "Without support, the effects of these challenges can be traumatic leading to serious issues such as anxiety, depression, addiction and self-harm," Middleton continued.

What the Duchess of Cambridge apparently asks is for parents to be sensitive in asking for help when their children are noticeably having some mental health issues which is just as important as physical health issues. "We need to help young people and their parents understand that it's not a sign of weakness to ask for help. A child's mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same quality of support," Middleton said.

The Princess then encouraged everyone to take the first step in solving this critical issue: Open conversations. "The sigma about mental health means many children do not get the help they so badly need. This needs to change," Middleton said adding, "Together, with open conversations and greater understanding, we can ensure that attitudes towards mental health change and children receive the support they deserve."
