Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Follow Your Arrow’ Wins CMA 2014 Country Song of The Year

Despite releasing a controversial song about marijuana and living an alternative lifestyle, Kacey Musgraves' song "Follow Your Arrow" won the Song of the Year award during the recently concluded 48th Annual CMA Awards.

"Do you guys realize what this means for country music?" Musgraves said during her acceptance speech.

Even though she did not go into detail in her speech, many believed it was in reference to her song lyrics which tackled same sex relationships and smoking pot, which is usually a sensitive and often tabooed topics in country songs.

According to the country singer, receiving the award "meant so much" because it was a song about real life, which is what the country music genre was usually based upon.

"And it was because of the fans that connected with it who spread it and took it farther than I ever could," she added.

The song was co-written by Musgraves together with Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally. Because of the win, Musgraves and Clark became two out of only 14 women who were able to take home the CMA Song of the Year award.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, Musgraves shared that after coming off the stage from accepting the award, Vince Gill grabbed her and told her that it was "the biggest award you can ever win."

"Follow Your Arrow" was released in March 2013 under the album- Same Trailer Different Park.

Because of its controversial song lyrics advocating the use of marijuana and homosexuality, it has earned both praise and outrage.

The song managed to land on the No. 43 spot on the Billboard Country Airplay chart despite receiving a moderate amount of radio airplay.

However, according to Mapes, the win of "Arrow" on the CMA signals a new era in country music, wherein musicians will be able to tackle sensitive issues that were once frowned upon.
