Justin Wilson Death News: IndyCar Driver Dies Following Head Injury
After suffering a severe head injury at Pocono raceway, IndyCar announced that 37-year-old Justin Wilson died Monday. The announcement was made at 9.00 p.m. ET Monday.
As reported by From The Marbles, Wilson was hit in the head by a piece of debris that came from Sage Karam's car. Karam was the race leader at the time of the incident, but crashed by himself, which spread debris from his car across the track.
Wilson was struck in the head by what appeared to the nose cone of Karam's car, which bounced on the track and struck a trailing Wilson in the helmet, according to the report.
The English driver was then airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Cedar Crest, Pennsylvania, where he fell into a coma.
"This is a monumentally sad day for IndyCar and the motorsports community as a whole," IndyCar CEO Mark Miles said in a statement. "Justin's elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility - which is what made him one of the most respected members of the paddock. As we know, the racing industry is one big family, and our efforts moving forward will be focused on rallying around Justin's family to ensure they get the support they need during this unbelievably difficult time."
Wilson is survived by his wife Julia and their two children.
As noted by the From The Marbles report, Wilson is the first IndyCar Series driver to die since Dan Wheldon in 2012. Wheldon was killed after suffering a horrific head injury stemming from a large crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
A Sheffield, England native, Wilson won seven major US open-wheels, including three in the IndyCar Series.
"So sad to hear that we lost Justin Wilson today. Thoughts & prayers to his family and friends," tweeted Jeff Gordon.
"My friend, brother, teammate and especially to one of the most amazing people I have had the pleasure to be around. I love you @justin_wilson," offered AJ Allmendinger.
