Justin Bieber News: Singer Pleads Guilty to Assault and Careless Driving Charges
On Thursday, Justin Bieber's lawyer confirmed that the singer pleaded guilty to charges of assault and careless driving in connection to a collision and altercation with a photographer near his hometown in Canada.
Bieber, 21-years-old, appeared in at the hearing through a video link from Los Angeles.
The star received an absolute discharge on the assault charge and a fine of 750 Canadian dollars for his careless driving charge. He was also fined a victim surcharge.
The pop star had originally been charged with dangerous driving after the incident, which took place in last August, but that charge was dropped.
The incident took place when Bieber was visiting Stratford, Ontario with Selena Gomez.
Bieber's lawyer stated that the two were "disrupted by the unwelcome presence of paparazzi."
Local media reported at the time that there was a physical altercation following the collision between a minivan and an all terrain vehicle outside of the town.
Brian Greenspan, Bieber's lawyer, stated that the fact that the assault charges were absolutely discharged proved that the incident was provoked and that it was not extensive.
"The assault was described even by the photographer as a couple of slaps -- certainly three at the most - that he deflected with his shoulder," said Greenspan.
Bieber is a constant target of the paparazzi and has had several incidents with the law.
In August, he pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving and resisting an officer without violence in Florida, which was part of a deal to throw out allegations that he had been drag racing under the influence.
