Justin Bieber Latest News: Pop Superstar Pleads Guilty in Reckless Driving Case, Fined C$600 in Canada
Pop Superstar Justin Bieber pleaded guilty of several charges related to assault and reckless driving in Canada while he was on an outing with his former girlfriend and singer/ actress Selena Gomez in August 2014. According to reports, the 21-year-old singer attended the Canadian court on Thursday via Skype from the Los Angeles office of his lawyer Howard Weitzman.
IB Times reports that Bieber has to compensate C$750 ($600) for the reckless driving charge and another C$100 ($79) as victim surcharge. Quoting Reuters, the report says that the pop superstar will not be required to serve a jail term. Earlier, CNN reported that Bieber was ordered to answer the charges at a hearing in Stratford, Ontario, in September last.
The charges against Bieber were a result of his arrest in Stratford close to his father's house last year. Local officers had responded to a crash between a minivan of an unnamed photographer and Bieber's all-terrain vehicle. According to reports, the officers also found that the two drivers had been involved in physical exchanges.
According to Entertainment Weekly, at that time, Brain Greenspan, Bieber's lawyer, had released a statement saying that his client's weekend "was unfortunately disrupted by the unwelcome presence of paparazzi." The statement further read, "This has regrettably resulted in charges of dangerous driving and assault."
Later, Greenspan told the Entertainment Weekly, "All the sudden there were cameras and he reacted badly to it," adding: "...he (Bieber) acknowledged what he did."
At that time, Bieber was released on "a promise to appear," the report says.
This is, however, not the first time the Canadian pop superstar got himself in legal trouble. In August 2014, Bieber had pleaded guilty to careless driving as well as resisting an officer without violence in Florida, following accusations of drag racing in a Lamborghini under the influence of drugs and alcohol, reports Reuters. In July 2014, he again pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vandalism for egging his neighbor's house in California. Then, he was sentenced to probation for two years.
