'Joy' News: Director David O. Russell Talks Inspiration for 'Joy'
'Joy' will apparently be one of writer and director David O. Russel's most innovative films, in terms of ambition. Recently, the director spoke about the film and his goals in creating it.
"I wanted to do an epic, unexpected story about the interior life of one woman's soul, from the ages of 10 to 40," says Russell of the film, which is set to debut on December 25th.
The title of the film refers to the name of the lead character, Joy, who is portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence.
Joy is a businesswoman who is forced to become the head of her family at twenty seven years old.
Russell's inspiration for the character came from Joy Mangano, the inventor and founder of Ingenious Designs.
He also drew on the personal influences of females in his youth, including that of his mother and her friends.
"It's my first film that really has the woman as the star," continues Russell. "What's it like to become a boss and the godmother of a family and dynasty both emotionally and commercially? You go inside that person's soul and it's alternately hilarious, horrifying and sort of joyous. Relationships are always complex, and nobody gets to success without breaking some of their own bones -- and other people's, too."
Also starring in the film will be Virginia Madsen, Diane Ladd, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.
Lawrence, Cooper and De Niro have previously worked with Russell in 'Silver Linings Playbook' and 'American Hustle'.
