Jones vs. Johnson UFC 187 Title Fight News: 'Bones' versus 'Rumble' on May 23 in Las Vegas
UFC Light Heavyweight Jon "Bones" Jones will be defending his title against dynamo Anthony "Rumble" Johnson in the main event of UFC 187 on May 23 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada, the UFC announced.
The Jones-Johnson matchup will headline a top-heavy card, with UFC Middleweight champion also defending his title against Brazilian legend Vitor Belfort in the co-main event.
UFC President Dana White has also said that fan favorite Donald Cerrone will be on the card, when he takes on Khabib Nurmagomedov.
"I am so [expletive] stoked for that card. What Jon Jones has done is almost hard to believe. Go back to 2009 and look at who he's beaten. It's incredible," White told Yahoo! Sports.
Jones has strung together 12 straight wins since being controversially disqualified for illegal blows against Matt Hamill in 2009.
Among his list of victims include former champions Mauricio Rua, Quintin Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and Rashad Evans.
In his unbeaten run, he came close to losing only twice"”when he was caught by Belfort in a solid arm bar, and when Alexander Gustaffson took him to five rounds before losing a close unanimous decision.
He will be facing a man in Johnson, who is also riding a nine-fight wine streak of his own, including three since his return to the UFC"”two of which were brutal knockouts.
"What he's doing with his power is crazy," White said. "He moved up two divisions and is knocking out legit 205-pounders. This isn't like boxing, where if you move up two divisions, you're going up six or eight pounds. He's fighting way bigger guys than he used to and his power is incredible."
After testing positive for cocaine in an out-of-competition test before his bout against Daniel Cormier, he has passed all subsequent tests.
He's already licensed for Nevada for 2015, so he isn't likely to have to appear before the commission before his bout against Johnson.
