Jon Jones UFC 2015 News: MMA Champ Considers Heavyweight Fight Against Cain Velasquez
Jon Jones has already made his mark as one of the most dominant champions in UFC history, and while he is set to face an extremely dangerous striker in Anthony "Rumble" Johnson in UFC 187, the pound-for-pound MMA king is already entertaining the thought of a possible super fight with UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.
"I don't know when I'm going to move up in weight," admitted Jones during Saturday's UFC 184 Welcome to the Show presser in Los Angeles. "I've entertained the thought of going to heavyweight so many times. But if I do go to heavyweight, or when I do go to heavyweight, I do believe I have the skill set to beat Cain," he boldly claimed.
Whenever Velasquez has been free from his string of injuries, the Heavyweight champion has likewise been in dominant form, being undefeated since 2011. While both champions have respective scheduled opponents in line, with Velasquez set to face Fabricio Werdum in UFC 188, they have dominated their divisions enough that constant talk of a possible super fight keeps coming up.
Jones talked about his chances if they ever meet inside the cage, "My main reason for believing I'll beat Cain is his size. He's not one of these massive heavyweights who's going to outweigh me and out-power me in every situation. He's a guy I can totally compete with."
Jones makes a point, as noted by a Cagewriter report, Velasquez, who just has one defeat in 14 games, weighs 240 pounds on average"”25 pounds below the heavyweight limit.
On the other hand, Jones (one controversial disqualification loss in 22 fights) is a large lightweight, with most experts believing that a move to heavyweight would only be a matter of time.
Other numbers: Velasquez is 6'1" while Jones is 6'4". Jones also has a four and a half reach advantage over the heavyweight champion.
"When it happens, it will be a good one," says Jones.
