UFC News, Rumors 2015: Jon Jones Arrested on Felony Charges, Posts $2,500 Bail
While Jon Jones' January cocaine incident remains murky, the public and his employers in the UFC were more than willing to give this generation's greatest mixed martial artist the benefit of the doubt. But it appears his personal issues have yet to be left behind.
After an incident Sunday morning, Jones was arrested on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injuries, as reported by MMAFighting. The UFC Light Heavyweight champion allegedly ran a red light, which led to him hitting a car driven by a pregnant woman identified as one Vanessa Sonnenberg. On that note, the woman broke her arm in the incident.
Jones was supposedly seen fleeing the scene on foot, but not before grabbing a handful of cash from the rental he was supposedly driving. Police found marijuana and a marijuana pipe in the car.
According to the report, Sonnenberg's injury caused Jones' charge to be upgraded from a potential misdemeanor to a felony. After the arrest warrant was issued Monday afternoon, the fighter's lawyers arranged for Jones to turn himself in, as relayed by the Albuquerque Police Department. A few hours after turning himself in, Jones was released after posting a $2,500 bail.
Jones only recently moved to Albuquerque after residing in upstate New York. He brought with him his fiancée and three daughters with the move that brought him closer to his team Jackson-WinkelJohn MMA in New Mexico City.
The world's best pound-for-pound fighter has had a history with driving under the influence. Back in 2012, he was charged with DWI, and just this year, he tested positive for cocaine metabolites in an out-of-competition test done by the Nevada Athletic Commission. According to MMAFighting, NAC executive director Bob Bennett said that the commission is monitoring this most recent incident closely.
Jones is scheduled to face Anthony Johnson at the main event of UFC 187. The UFC said is still awaiting more information before releasing a statement.
