Legendary musician Johnny Cash will release a previously unheard album in the Spring of 2014. Cash died in 2003 after a long and prosperous music career filled with hit songs like "Hurt," "Ring of Fire" and "Folsom Prison Blues." The record that will be released next year is called "Out Among the Stars" and is filled with songs that were recorded between 1981 and 1984 with Columbia Music producer Billy Sherrill.
John Carter Cash, Johnny Cash's son, holds the rights to all of Cash's estate and recordings. He told ABC News, "They never threw anything away. They kept everything in their lives. They had an archive that had everything in it from the original audio tapes from 'The Johnny Cash Show' to random things like a camel saddle, a gift from the prince of Saudi Arabia."
The sons that are on "Out Among the Stars" come from a strange time in Johnny Cash's career. He was experiencing a low point in his popularity because Nashville was being taken over by "urban cowboys" who wrote mainly pop country designed for the radio. Cash never gave into the pop country phase, for what it's worth, according to his son.
"Dad was always uniquely himself. And later on the world would come back around. He never modified himself. But Nashville at the time was in a completely different place. I think him working with Billy was sort of an effort by the record company to put him more in the circle of Music Row and see what could happen at the heart of that machine."
