John Nash Death News: Inspiration Behind 'A Beautiful Mind' Killed in a Car Crash
On May 23rd, 2015, globally celebrated mathematician, John Nash and his wife, Alicia, died tragically in a taxi accident. Nash was 86 years of age, and his wife was 82 years old. The driver of the taxi cab lost control of his vehicle while driving on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Nash is a Nobel Prize winner, and the focus of the film A Beautiful Mind, which has won an Oscar. He and his wife were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the New York Times, the taxi was attempting to pass another car and hit a guard rail, as well as another vehicle. Reports also suggest that the couple were not wearing seat belts, as they were both thrown from the vehicle upon impact.
Nash is best known for his work in game theory, and won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994. He was often referred to as the greatest mathematician of the 20th century and he also suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.
The film A Beautiful Mind, which was inspired by his life story, was released in 2001 and won both Oscar and Academy awards. In the film, Nash was portrayed by Russel Crowe. Crowe received much critical acclaim for his role in the film.
Nash and his wife, Alicia, were married in 1957, and divorced in 1962. They stayed close, and as his condition improved, they remarried in 2001.
Together, the couple advocated healthcare.
The driver of the taxi and the driver of the other car involved in the accident were both treated for non life threatening injuries, and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
