John Hamm Relationship News: 'Mad Men' Creator Wishes Hamm and Westfeldt the Best

Matthew Weiner, creator of Mad Men, had gotten to know John Hamm pretty well after working with him on the series for seven seasons, and he says he wants what is best for the actor.

Following the announcement of the split-up of Hamm and Westfeldt after 18 years of being together, Weiner made it a point to "check in" with the 44-year-old actor.

"It's a personal thing for him, and he's a public person, I guess, so it's an issue," Weiner shared with People when the magazine spoke to him at Saturday's Creative Arts Emmy Awards. He was addressing Hamm's difficulties about the breakup.

Weiner, 50, has confidence that Hamm will pull through, he said.

"All I can say is I wish him the best. I wish them both the best. They're both incredibly talented, wonderful people. They'll both find happiness, there's no doubt in my mind."

Weiner has stayed in touch with both the stars of Mad Men, which aired on AMC for 7 seasons and finally wrapped this year.

He shares that he feels "bittersweet" seeing them move on to other projects, but there is also a sense of relief now the show has ended.

"I felt a little bit freed by the finale. I was thrilled with the reaction and a little bit surprised at how well it went over.

Now that he has had some rest and relaxation, the creator of the TV drama can think back and realize "how rare someone like the people I work with are."

Weiner also looks forward to the future:

"I'm going to do a number of things. I find that when I watch a lot of what's on, they are not TV series and some of that's exciting, and some of it's frustrating. So I'm looking forward to having a chance to experiment."
