Jodi Arias Trial News, Latest Update: Mistrial Reported for Travis Alexander Murder Case

After another long two and a half years, the trial of Jodi Arias finally came to a close on Thursday. After the jury could not decide as to whether Arias should receive the death penalty or not, Judge Sherry Stephens declared a mistrial.

Arias, now 34, was convicted of first-degree murder in 2013 for stabbing her boyfriend Travis Alexander 27 times, slashing his throat from ear to ear and shooting him in the head back in 2008. She had also taken photos of Alexander before and after the murder. When the body was found by a few of Alexander's friends and the local police, Arias tried to cover up her crime by destroying the photos by putting her camera through a cycle in her washing machine. She also lied by telling the police he was murdered by two masked gunmen. When suspicions arose against her again, she claimed self-defense.

This is the second time the death penalty hearing was put on for Arias. The first time the jury also struggled with reaching a consensus in favor of the death penalty by a vote of 11-1. The second trial focused of Arias' mental state rather than the actual murder.

The first case gained national attention as the entire thing was broadcasted live. Arias testified and was very explicit with her relationship with Alexander and the crime. However, she never took the stand for the second trial.

It is now up to Judge Stephens to determine if Arias will receive life in prison or be put on parole after 25 years. In accordance with Arizona state law, the death penalty will longer be an option. Arias' official hearing will be April 13.
