Joan Rivers’ Official Autopsy, Cause of Death News: Daughter Melissa Declines Postmortem Examination

Joan Rivers' daughter, Melissa, made the decision to refuse to have her mother's body undergo an autopsy, which could lead to family and officials never completely finding out the circumstances involved in Rivers' death.

As stated by sources connected to the New York City Medical Examiner, Melissa "was despondent and told doctors she did not want an autopsy to be performed," according to TMZ.

Doctors are bound by law to honor the decision of family members with regards to the bodies of their loved ones, especially if the death carried no traces or evidences of criminality.

However, if Melissa and her family completes the decision to decline the autopsy, it would be impossible to pinpoint the exact nature of Rivers' death.

Rivers' official cause of death Aug. 28 was "anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest," or low blood oxygen. According to the official statement released by the case's Chief Medical Examiner; Rivers suffered complications during a medical check-up at Yorkville Endoscopy clinic in Manhattan.

Rivers' throat, esophagus, stomach and small intestine were being examined for voice changes and possible acid reflux when she suddenly went into cardiac arrest. She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital and put on life support, but passed away Sept. 4.

Dr. Gwen Korovin of the Yorkville clinic had performed an unplanned biopsy during River's check-up.

While official statements have come out, the exact nature and course of events of these complications have yet to be determined. As The New York Times pointed out, the reports left many unanswered questions regarding "errors of omission, clinical judgment/management or missed diagnosis."

Yorkville clinic is currently being investigated. The International Business Times publication stated that the case could be closed by January 2015, pending the unfavorable results of the investigation of Rivers' death.
