Jennifer Hudson Co-Stars With Cynthia Erivo In Revival Musical, 'The Color Purple'
Jennifer Hudson joins the revival of the hit musical, "The Color Purple." She co-stars Cynthia Erivo in the show that was last performed seven years ago.
It is both Hudson and Erivo's debut in Broadway according to Deadline. The two are also accompanied by Danielle Brooks. Brooks plays Taystee in the television series, "Orange is the New Black."
Erivo plays Celie, a woman who always gets abused by men up until Shug, played by Hudson, tells her to stand up for herself and be independent. Brooks on the other hand, plays Sofia according to NY Post.
Writer Marsha Norman adapts the novel of Alice Walker. She shortens the story by cutting out some of the unessential; leaving different reactions from experts. Some say that because of this, the changes in the personality of the characters are too sudden, while some say that the revision made the story smoother.
Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray made lovely songs covering lively dance music, heart-warming ballads and comic numbers.
In other Hudson News, the singer/actress said according to Chicago Tribune that she doesn't plan to visit the killings of her family members back in 2008.
Hudson's mother, brother and nephew were found dead in Chicago in October 2008 due to gun shots on their bodies. Hudson's former brother-in-law, William Balfour, was found guilty of the killings and was imprisoned for life in 2012.
Hudson said that she initially hesitated when director Spike Lee offered her a role portraying a mother whose daughter gets killed by a stray bullet. She later on realized that it may be a calling that she needs to answer.
"The film we're doing is trying to save my city, as my mother said, take care of home. So for that reason I was like, 'Okay, I get it, it's worth doing.' But I don't think it's anything I will ever, ever revisit again," she said.
