Jayson Tatum News: ESPN No. 2 Jayson Tatum Commits to Duke Blue Devils
Reigning national champions Duke Blue Devils has gotten a commitment from its first five-star prospect as Jayson Tatum announced his intention to attend the university after a semifinal game against the CP3 squad at the Peach Jam, ESPN reports.
Tatum is ranked No. 2 in the ESPN Class of 2016. He chose Duke over other programs that include North Carolina, Kentucky and his hometown Saint Louis.
"I love the way the program is run and I love the way the academics are set up," Tatum said. "My relationships with the Duke coaches were the best, and they made me a priority. They did the best job of recruiting me and have been at almost all my games, and that means a lot."
As ESPN notes, Tatum made his only official visit to Duke back in February for the Blue Devils' game against Syracuse, with other unofficial visits made by the prospect being to Kentucky and Saint Louis.
The forward from Chaminade College Prep in Saint Louis is a versatile wing player with good size at 6'8," and projects to give Duke a player that could score both from outside and in the post.
"I love Coach K's passion to coach his players and to coach the game," Tatum said of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. "I examined and watched the interaction between him and his staff, along with the players, and was impressed how hard they played."
ESPN points out that with Tatum's commitment, Duke will now focus on a couple more studs from the 2016 class, which includes North Carolina natives Harry Giles (ESPN No. 1) and Dennis Smith (ESPN No. 5).
Tatum and Giles were roommates earlier this month when the U.S. U-19 team won the gold medal in Greece.
"I've got a little recruiting to do," Tatum said.
Giles has been regularly compared to five-time NBA All-Star Chris Webber.
