Jay-Z and Will Smith News: Hollywood Moguls Producing Emmett Till Mini-Series

It has recently been reported that rap artist Jay-Z and Will Smith will be teaming up to produce an HBO mini-series on the Emmett Till story.

This will be the second time that the two prominent figures in entertainment will have linked up for a project, making it all the more anticipated. It's also monumental to see this unfortunate story in black history finally being brought to such a big network.

"Chicago native Till was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi in August 1955 when he spoke and possibly flirted with Carolyn Bryant, the 21-year-old White co-owner of a local grocery store, reportedly asking her on a date. Several nights later, Bryant's husband Roy and his half-brother J. W. Milam went to Till's great-uncle's house, forcefully took him and tortured him before shooting him in the head throwing his body in the Tallahatchie River.

"Till's mother Mamie insisted on an open-casket public funeral, with the image of the boy's mutilated body shocking the country. (The original casket is now at the Smithsonian.) In September 1955, Bryant and Milam were acquitted of Till's kidnapping and murder though later admitted to killing him under the shield of the double jeopardy provision," writes Deadline.

Jay Brown and James Lassiter will also serve as executive producers alongside Aaron Kaplan. This will be Kaplan's first miniseries project, and will reunite Smith and Carter since their 'Annie' remake project in 2014.

A 2003 feature documentary, a PBS special, and 60 Minutes segment has been done on the Emmett Till story.

The project is currently untitled and hasn't yet received a release date.
