'It' Movie Cast News: Director Cary Fukunaga Walks Away From Project

Fans may have to wait a bit longer for the remake of Stephen King's 'It,' as director Cary Fukunaga has recently left the project, resulting in production being pushed back.

"Production was slated to begin in three weeks, but the script has not been finalized, and the budget number was not reached. The financial side was pegged as a primary source of contention between the studio and Fukunaga, while reported discord about shooting in New York was not a real issue, nor was Poltergeist's poor early showing, according to the source," writes EW.

Fukunaga and Chase Palmer were initially working on two scripts for the project. One depicting the main cast as kids, and the other as adults. The second movie was to be released a year after the first.

"The story follows a group of teens called the Losers Club who defeat a creature called It. Years later, the creature returns, and the members of the club - now adults - have to band together again even though they have no memory of the first battle," writes Hollywood Reporter.

'Maze Runner' actor Mike Poulter was also recently casted a the titular It clown. His portrayal was to mark a new younger take of the villain.

The current future of the project is now in flux and has no certain release date.

Fukunaga was reportedly working on the film for years, as it was a passion project of his.

"At a Tribeca Film Festival panel with former Focus CEO James Schamus last month, Fukunaga seemed excited to begin filming the project, which he said he was then eight weeks away from starting to shoot in New York. The project would have marked the first movie he filmed in New York City since film school," writes Hollywood Reporter.
