ISIS News Update Today: Supporters Hack CENTCOM Twitter & YouTube Pages
The Twitter and YouTube accounts of the U.S Central Command (CENTCOM) were hacked on Monday, January 12, by a hacker group which claims to support the militant organization ISIS.
Messages and images continued to flood the websites ever since the first post appeared at 12:29 pm ET, according to CNBC.
The websites were flooded with messages such as "American soldiers, we are coming, watch your back," "I love you ISIS" and one of the tweets said "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the CyberCaliphate continues its CyberJihad."
This form of cyber vandalism took place 30 minutes before CENTCOM took measures to revert back to the original content on the sites. The FBI and the Department of Defense (DoD) is investigating the matter to find out the perpetrators and any other such potential breaches of security of the military, according to Al Jazeera.
Apart from posting threats, the group had also posted pictures of a figure in a black-and-white headscarf, images of China labeled with strategic military locations, a Pentagon image featuring a map of North Korean nuclear facilities and other such "classified" information.
ISIS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a rebel group in the regions of Iraq and Syria, has claimed itself a worldwide caliphate organization that has committed war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and mass killing in the name of Jihad.
Islamic State forces have been targeted in air strikes by the United States and international partners. CENTCOM, has been involved in the handling of operations such as air strikes against ISIS in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.
President Obama has vowed to take stringent action against such acts of cyber breaches, including the hacking on Sony Entertainment which was blamed on North Korea. Obama has prepared new proposals to deal with such threats in the wake of recent events.
