iPod News: Apple Relegates Device to Apple Store Accessories Shelf, Declining Sales Responsible
Poor iPod sales have pretty much put iconic portable music player to the sideline. In fact, 9to5 Mac reports that in order to revamp its retail stores, Apple now plans to shift the iPod to Apple Store Accessory shelves.
According to IB Times, starting Wednesday, iPods will live along with other products such as Apple Watch bands and iPhone cases and enabling customers to directly pull the music player off the shelf for purchase. In fact, this is a change from the old model wherein customers asked an employee to get an iPod from the storeroom. Earlier, Apple has done this with some other product lines, including the Apple TV as well as its assortment of Airport wireless routers.
In addition to the iPod, Apple is also doing away with its iPad smart signs to load product information onto iPhones, iPads and Macs on display directly. 9to5 Mac quotes anonymous soutce saying that partially, this is owing to the fact that Apple found customers would confuse the signs for demo units.
According to the report, the latest retail change is among several that have taken place under the guidance of Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts. The other changes include redesigned third-party accessory boxes that are suited to the store aesthetic and latest display tables for accommodating Apple's latest product - the Apple Watch. Moreover, Apple has also made some changes to its official website by merging the Apple Online Store with the Apple.com website.
There was a time when Apple's iPod was considered to be among the company's flagship devices. Nevertheless, sales for the music player have declined sharply over the years. As a result, Apple made necessary changes to its financial reporting in 2015 by downgrading the media player to the "Other Products" category, which also includes the Apple TV, Beat Electronics, third-party accessories and currently - the Apple Watch.
