Interstellar and Big Hero 6 Box Office News: Interstellar Falls Short Of Expectations, Big Hero 6 Responsible?
'Interstellar' debuted at $47.5 million in its opening weekend, which was around $3 million less than Paramount Pictures' expected $50 million box office pull, according to Variety.
Paramount Pictures was forced to revise its prediction after the film fell short of expectations, and analysts are claiming that its less than expected earnings may be part of the reason why the film is receiving some negative press.
Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations, said, "It's a little bit of a disappointment. Expectations are always very high for a filmmaker of Christopher Nolan's caliber."
Eric Wold, an analyst with B. Riley and Company, initially predicted that the film will do well. He now claims that Nolan's 'Interstellar' did almost as well as the 2013 film 'Gravity' on a per-screen-average basis, and that that the 2010 science fiction heist thriller film 'Inception' earned more than four times during its opening weekend compared to 'Interstellar' and 'Gravity'.
Analyst Eric Handler, of MKM Partners, said IMAX showings did help the film's earnings, saying "a lot of people wanted to wait with the view that they wanted to see it in IMAX."
Despite criticisms for its homeland haul, however, the film did better internationally. It earned $82.9 million to push its total earnings to around $130.6 million.
Some are claiming that the poor showing for 'Interstellar' is not because of its three-hour-long showing time or its complex sci-fi plot, but is due to its competition in the animated film 'Big Hero 6', according to The Guardian.
Disney and Marvel's animated superhero film 'Big Hero 6' edged out 'Interstellar' with a box office opening weekend of $56.2 million. The Guardian claimed that the animated film's haul could be attributed to its younger target audience, which was why it beat out 'Interstellar'.
'Interstellar' is a film about a team of space travelers who went through a wormhole to search for a new habitable planet, after Earth started suffering food shortages and incurred a decline in its population.
The movie features Matthew McConaughey as Cooper, Anne Hathaway as Amelia Brand, Jessica Chastain as Murph, Michael Caine as Professor Brand, David Gyasi as Romilly and Casey Affleck as Tom Cooper.
