Indonesian Military Airplane Crash News: Indonesian Air Force Plane Crashes, Killing Dozens

An Indonesian Air Force plane, which was transporting military personnel and their families, crashed into a residential neighborhood in Medan, Indonesia.

Medan is the third largest city in Indonesia, and the plan crashed shortly after takeoff, killing dozens of people on Tuesday.

Television footage showed the wreckage of the C-130 Hercules, as well as a burning car and a shattered building.

According to local media, the building was built recently, and contained a spa, shops and homes.

Rescue teams scrambled through the rubble, searching for survivors.

Air Force chief Air Marshall, Agus Supriatna said that so far, forty nine bodies have been found and taken to Medan's Adam Malik hospital.

He also added that it is not likely that there will be any survivors.

The plane's manifest showed that there were a total of fifty people on the flight, which was leaving Medan to go to the remote island chain of Natuna.

However, based on a statement from the North Sumatra police chief, Eko Hadi Sutedjo, the actual number of people on the flight may have been even higher.

Supriatna stated that there were twelve crew members, and over one hundred passengers on the plane before it reached Medan.

It had traveled from the capital of the country, Jakarta and stopped at two locations before reaching Medan.

The air force is trying to determine exactly how many people got off of the plane, or boarded it during that journey.

After the emergency response has been completed, the government will take a closer look at the age of air force planes and other military equipment, says President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
