Indianapolis 500: Juan Pablo Montoya Wins Second Indy 500 of Career
Juan Pablo Montoya won the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 Sunday, winning it for the second time in his career, 15 years after winning it as a rookie back in 2000.
In an incredibly exciting last 15 laps of the race, Montoya, Will Power, and Scott Dixon traded between the top three spots before Montoya took the lead for good with just three laps remaining. His teammate Power finished second, Charlie Kimball took third, while Dixon fell to the fourth spot. Graham Rahal rounded out the top five.
"I knew I had an awesome car," the Colombia native said. "I knew I could come back through the field. That fight there at the end? That was just awesome," said Montoya who had to battle driving from last place to first.
During a caution period early in the race, Simona de Silvestro crashed into Montoya's car damaging his rear fender, which forced him to make an unscheduled pit stop for repairs. That stop caused to fall into last place among the pack of 30 cars that were still racing.
"I mean, with Simona in back of me, that's what happens when you qualify bad. You find yourself in the wrong crowd," said Montoya who qualified 15th out of the 33 starters for Sunday's race.
Adding, "There's a hundred ways to throw this away, and there's only one way of winning it. The guy that makes the least mistakes is going to have the best shot at winning it. We executed today beautifully. Made a couple of mistakes early, but then we got our composure back and came back."
The race had several crashes, with the biggest one coming with 25 laps to go when Jack Hawksworth spun and touched Sebastian Saavedra causing a chain reaction of crashes.
Montoya recently returned to IndyCar racing after experimenting with NASCAR and Formula One where he didn't have much success.
