'Independence Day 2' New Cast News: Vivica A. Fox to Reprise Role as Jasmine Dubrow in Sequel Film
In an announcement via Twitter, Director Roland Emmerich and actress Vivica A. Fox both confirmed that Fox would reprise her role as Jasmine Dubrow in Independence Day 2 from the 1996 original.
Fox tweeted, "It's official that I'll b back 4 #IndependenceDay2 sequel playing #Jasmine."
"Exciting news...just officially closed @MsVivicaFox for Independence Day," tweeted Emmerich.
Fox's Jasmine Dubrow portrayed a single mother who was an exotic dancer and Steven Hiller's (Will Smith) girlfriend. Fox is also known for her roles in the Kill Bill films, Batman & Robin, and Sharknado 2: The Second One.
Also to return is Jeff Goldblum, who played the computer genius David Levison, who helped plant a virus in the first film that helped defeat an alien race determined to wipe out man kind's existence.
Unfortunately, Will Smith is confirmed as not returning for the sequel film. "Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," Emmerich told The New York Daily News in 2013.
New cast members that will most likely be the center of attention are Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Jessie Usher. Usher will play the son of Will Smith's Steven Hiller. The roles for the other two stars mentioned have yet to be determined.
Emmerich will be returning to helm Independence Day 2, with a script penned by Carter Blanchard. Dean Devlin, Emmerich and Harald Kloser will produce, according to Entertainment Weekly.
According to the New York Daily News, the original Independence Day grossed $817.4 million at the box office worldwide. The second film is set for a June 24, 2016, release almost exactly 20 years since the first film debuted.
