'Independence Day 2' Cast News: Sela Ward Takes Charge as President in Upcoming Movie

In the first Independence Day, the president, Thomas J. Whitmore, was played by Bill Pullman. Of course, he cannot still be the president 20 years later when the next movie takes place, so there's going to be a different one this time around.

Thus, Sela Ward will be portraying the president of the United States, President Lanford, in Independence Day 2.

She will be in the White House, as the Earth is forced to defend itself against alien invasion once again. She is one of the new actors entering the franchise. She is joined by Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Travis Tope and Joey King.

Many of the cast members from the original film are returning as well. Returning cast members include Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum. Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner.

Sadly, Will Smith, who played Captain Steve Hiller in Independence Day, will not be returning to reprise his role. This is to the disappointment of many fans of the movies.

Roland Emmerich has been working hard on the draft of the script for the movie, which is set to go into production soon.

Independence Day grossed 811 million at the box office globally when it first debuted in theaters.

It was the second highest grossing movie at all time when it was released, but it has lost its place to the wave of superhero movies that has come since.

It is now the 43rd highest grossing movie of all time, and hopefully Independence Day 2 will be able to come somewhere close to its predecessor's total when it goes to theaters.

The movie is set to go to the big screen on July 4th, 2016.
