'Independence Day 2' Release Date, Cast News: Producers Tap Actress Maika Monroe For Patricia Whitmore Role

The highly anticipated 'Independence Day 2' film has added actress Maika Monroe to their all-star growing cast.

Monroe, most notable for her recent horror film, 'It Follows,' will play Patricia Whitmore, the grown daughter of Bill Pullman's President. The role was previously portrayed by Mae Whitman, however it is unclear if she refused the role, or just wasn't tapped to reprise it.

"Monroe stars as a teen in 'It Follows' who, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions - leaving her unable to shake the sensation that someone or something is following her. The micro-budget film has been a breakout success for TWC-Radius with grosses topping $14 million," writes Variety.

Director Roland Emmerich revealed the news on Twitter stating:

"I have another addition to announce. The beautiful & talented Maika Monroe is officially signed on 2 the Independence Day Sequel!"

'The Guest' actress will now star amongst the previously announced cast of Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Vivica A. Fox, Travis Tope, Joey King, Judd Hirsch, and Brent Spiner. Missing from the roster would be Will Smith, the lead of the last film, however it is believed he turned the project down due to obligations with 'Suicide Squad.'

"The casting of Independence Day 2 is widely varied with returning characters and new players, the latter of which are also a mix of action stars and genre film actors. It's likely Emmerich and those at Fox are hoping to appeal to fans of the original Independence Day with all the returning characters, while still making the sequel accessible to new audiences," writes Screen Rant.

Almost exactly 20 years later, fans will get to see 'Independence Day 2' on June 24th, 2016.
