'Independence Day 2' Cast News: Will Smith Ruled Out - Liam Hemsworth Brought In?

Recent reports suggest that director Roland Emmerich has offered the lead role in his upcoming 'Independence Day' sequel to 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' star Liam Hemsworth.

Even though, The Wrap claimed that this news was exclusive to the publication, on Oct. 31 last year, 'Independence Day' producer Haral Kloser tweeted a photo of himself with Hemsworth, which is a clear indication of the fact the two are in talks about the latter's participation in the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster.

It is expected that Hemsworth will be able to infuse some young blood into a film whose main cast has aged nearly two decades since they overcame threats from aliens in the original movie. As of now, it appears that only Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldlum will be returning to 'Independence Day 2' to reprise their respective roles from the first film. Talking to New York Daily, Emmerich has confirmed that Will Smith will not be returning to reprise his role that made him a super star. Besides, hiring Smith at this stage in his career will just skyrocket the film's cost.

Emmerich told New York Daily, "Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," adding, "It would be too much."

While it is certain that the upcoming movie will be divided into two parts, so far very little is known about 'Independence Day 2' plot. Nevertheless, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly way back in March 2013, Emmerich had revealed some details regarding where people would find the world of 'Independence Day' about two decades after the original alien attack.

At that time, the director said, "The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back." He went on to add, "And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that's 20 or 25 years."

As the alien threat returns, it will be necessary for a new generation of heroes to come forward and save the world. Hemsworth is expected to be a big get for the sequel in this situation, particularly because the actor is a familiar face in big-budget action movies, for instance 'The Expendables 2.'

In an earlier report, The Wrap hinted that Michael B. Jordan was also being considered for an unnamed role in 'Independence Day 2.'

Meanwhile, the sequel for 'Independence Day' has been tentatively titled 'ID Forever Part 1' and, as of now, is scheduled for a June 24, 2016 release.
