Immigration Reform News: Democrats Threaten To Block Homeland Security Bill

Senate Democrats have stricken back by threatening to block action on the Homeland Security Department bill unless Republicans cease their motive to reverse action on Obama's immigration policies.

Democrats have reportedly given it until February 27th until they move forward with this, although both sides have expressed disinterest in this outcome.

"Republicans have vowed since last fall they would use the funding measure to reverse Obama's recent shifts in immigration policies, and the House-passed bill is due on the Senate floor in the next few days," writes Associated Press.

In response to the Republicans, Senator Charles Schumer stated, "They seem to dislike the idea of supporting homeland security. They dislike dreamers more than they dislike ISIS."

Schumer has stated that he will continue to block action until Republicans drop the immigration provisions.

The House-passed bill would fund HSD for counterterrorism, and cybersecurity, however, Obama has threatened to veto this bill.

"If rather than try to solve the broken immigration system they compound the problem, I'll veto it," Obama said in a speech at a retreat for Democratic House lawmaker in Philadelphia.

He continued with saying that "the record shows that we were right."

"As passed in the House, the legislation would also reverse Obama's decision last fall to provide temporary deportation relief and work permits to an estimated 4 million immigrants in the country illegally, mostly people who have children who are citizens or legal permanent residents," writes Associated Press.

This of course would block the directive of getting work permits for over 600,000 illegal immigrants and stays of deportation.

"The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the measure would increase the federal deficit by $7.5 billion over a decade," writes Associated Press.
